XACT and the .NET Framework 1.1
If you are using XACT you might find that you keep on getting messages telling you that a reference to an object is invalid, particularly when you try to change values in the properties windows.
This is because XACT does not work unless you have version 1.1 of the .NET Framework installed on your machine. The Requirements information makes this point: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb203916.aspx and also provides a link from which the framework can be downloaded.
XACT Auditioning Utility problems
If you have problems using the XACT Audititioning utility on your PC it may be because your computer has a web server running, either IIS or something like Cassini. The XACT editor uses HTTP port 80 to send commands to the auditioning program, and if you have a web server running it swallows up these messages.
If you want the XACT program and the Auditioning Utility to work, you will have to stop all web servers on your machine.
