No More Nissan Cubes

Even on the Nissan website it is driving away from us….

Looks like my Nissan Cube is going to be even more special than I thought.  Nissan have stopped importing them from Japan, blaming a fall in the value of the pound against the yen which made the profit margins too thin.  I’ve had my Cube for a while now and I love it. Even the reviewers are deciding they quite like it.

Apparently there are still a few to be had at Nissan dealers, so if you really want to drive round in a conservatory then you might be able to snap one up if you are quick.

Before the fun starts….

Did my turn in the exam hall today. Something to do with micro-Biology. I’m glad I didn’t have to answer the questions, although the students there seemed to find plenty to write about. One candidate was very careful about erasing things that they thought were wrong. They must have gone through about a pen’s worth of ink crossing things out. A tip, never do this. Just put a single line through the text so that it is still readable. I’ve been known to give marks for crossed out stuff as long as it leaves me with the impression that the candidate knows something about the subject. If I can’t read what you have put then you have no chance of getting any credit for it.

I had this plan to turn up with a bunch of examiners, one dressed as an American  Indian, another as a construction worker, a third as a motorbike cop and so on… When someone asked who we were I could have said “Oh, we’re the ‘Invigilation People’”.

Anyone for Bletchley Park?

We still have some places available for the trip to Bletchley Park. If the price seems a bit steep remember that it includes all transport and also entry to the park itself.  Bletchley Park is pretty much the birthplace of the computer and also housed the code-breaking work that allowed us to win the Second World War. All in all, well worth a visit. I’m looking forward to going.

They also have a card punch machine just like the one I wrote my first programs on. (wipes away a manly tear).

Welcome to Blue Monday

Today is supposed to be “Blue Monday”, the most depressing day of the year.  A perfect day to have a programming exam methinks, or perhaps to get 170 scripts to mark….

Ikea Escape

Went to Ikea in Leeds today. Manage to escape with just a rug, two bats and a plant pot. Perhaps my cheapest trip there in ages.

Dilbert Déjà Vu

Got a new Dilbert calendar on Saturday. Now, I’m quite keen on recycling in general, but less impressed when it extends to the cartoons….

Pretty Crashes

My mouse went bonkers today and contrived to take my computer down in a very interesting way. The picture shows that sometimes even a crash can look quite good….

Wonderful Adobe Reader

Does anyone know why Adobe Reader still does this? And why it takes so long? And why the document looks rubbish when it has finished? And why the message is wrong, even though it has been been wrong for the last few versions of the stupid program? (all of which have a stupidly laborious upgrade procedure)

There. I feel much better now…. Oh, hang on, the reader has just crashed..

No Coffee Blues

Went into work today (after getting up at what seemed to be the middle of the night and scraping ice off the car for the first time in a week) to find that the coffee room was closed and both coffee machines in our building were broken. And I had a big pile of marking to do.

Now that everyone has gone home we can spend some time putting our lives back together ready for the Bright Prospect of the New Year (tm). I even washed the cars, so at least they will be clean underneath the layer of dirty they will undoubtedly acquire tomorrow…

Shazam and Zune Pass can damage your street cred.

I heard a tune on the radio that I quite liked this morning, so I used the amazing Shazam program on Windows Phone to find out what it was, and then downloaded it onto the phone for free using my Zune Pass. I thought this was quite impressive.

How was I to know it was Kylie Minogue?

New Years Eve Sheep Shearing

We’ve played a bunch of silly games over the last few days, what with having company and all. One of my favourites was this one from Lego. It is very simple to understand, and you can be quite nasty to your fellow players which is great fun.

Christmas Sales?

We went up town today in search of bargains. To be honest, I didn’t find a lot that impressed. Although we did manage to fill the back of the car somehow..

Full House

We have got a bunch of folks over for the New Year, and a mini-reprise of Christmas. That meant even more presents to unwrap, which was rather nice.

Fit to Write

Feeling a bit better today. I managed to spend a chunk of time going through the chapters for the next book. According to Amazon it will be available at the end of next month. Scary.

Christmas Bug

Along with my presents it seems I’ve also acquired a “Christmas Bug”. This pretty much laid me out today, so that I was reduced to lying in the back of the car and watching the frozen scenery go by as we rumbled home.

Big Pile of Presents

I got a huge pile of presents today. I don’t actually remember being that good over the last year, but I’ll take the presents if they are put in front of me….
